The impressive bulk of the memorial (45 metres high) is visible for many kilometres around. Its pillars bear the carved names of 73 367 men, the " Missing of the Somme" who died in the battles of the Somme and who have no known grave.
The visitor centre offers a number of different services, including an information desk, guided tours, a shop, etc... A large exhibition area provides visitors with the necessary keys to understanding the history of Thiepval during the First World War.
Close by the Ulster tower is the replica of a tower near the city of Belfast in the training camp of the 36th Division. On 1 July 1916 the division was caught between artillery fire from German and the British guns.
