Gardens

The Somme department has more than 30 parks and gardens: abbey gardens, château gardens, water gardens, public gardens and even military cemeteries the choice is rich and varied.
Six of them have been declared Jardin Remarquable!

The six “Remarkable Gardens” in the Somme department are well worth a visit:

the gardens of Bagatelle in Abbeville, showing both the classical French and less formal English styles, with some rare and very old specimens of trees,

the gardens of Valloires in Argoules: a private park of 8ha (20 acres) created by Gilles Clément, with a unique collection of 5000 species and varieties of plants grouped into different theme areas: rose garden, marsh, garden for the five senses, garden of evolution, medicinal herb garden, fascinating all year round,

the garden of Digeon, an old-fashioned vegetable garden, rose garden and many magnificent old trees,

English-style garden at the Château of Maizicourt,

romantic park and mediaeval rose garden at the Château of Rambures,

herbarium on the ramparts of Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, the reconstitution of the garden of a convent hospital with plants chosen for their ornamental, historical, culinary, or medicinal qualities.

To complete your visit, don’t miss the unforgettable boat trip in a barque à cornet through the water gardens, the Hortillonnages! This is a mosaic of market gardens separated by canals, forming a watery labyrinth.
