Cité Souterraine de Naours
why should you come?
Originally a chalk quarry in the 15th century, then a refuge for the inhabitants since the 17th century, hence their nickname of Muches (hiding places in Picardy), a place for smuggling in modern times, a popular tourist site for Australians and Englishmen during the First World War, a passive defense for the German army during the Second World War, the Cité souterraine de Naours has stood the test of time and reveals its history. Come and discover this huge site carved out of the limestone of the Picard plateau, remarkably organized and recognized as one of the largest in Northern France. At the end of this network of galleries, extend your visit with a visit to the Museum of Old Crafts and Trades and the Great War Interpretation Center. The estate also features a 10-hectare wooded park with an adventure park, two windmills, farm animals, a children's playground and mini-golf. Finally, the Brasserie des Muches is open from 12pm to 2pm for lunch, and continuously throughout the day for snacks and drinks.
Fancy doing something completely different, 33 metres beneath a hill? Then the underground refuges at Naours are for you! They are underground caves, hollowed out of the limestone by local people as a refuge during invasions. Children will love wandering around this maze of 28 tunnels and 300 chambers, in partial darkness which is exciting and a little bit scary... They can also enjoy running round the 10 hectare park with its brand new tree-topping attraction, "Krobranch"!
Go back in time when you explore this place, full of memories, which was used, amongst others, as a refuge for over 3,000 people in the Middle Ages. With your audio-guide you can hear stories about these caves, entirely man-made, and you may come across one of the heart-shaped drawings of a lovesick soldier .... This kind of tour can make you hungry, so enjoy a romantic picnic below the mills in the park of over 10 hectares! Magical...
Make the most of a grey or rainy day to stop at this pretty English cottage. A surprise awaits you there as you will be offered a trip underground! 33 m beneath the surface, your guide will reveal the secrets of this mysterious hiding place...
