The pirogue
Locomotion par excellence in the Baie de Somme
Head for Saint-Valery-sur-Somme or Le Crotoy, in the heart of the bay, for an unusual experience: an escapade in a pirogue to discover the salt meadows and observe the seal colony in a gentle way…
On the sandy beaches, these 12-meter long, slender boats, fitted with an outrigger on the side, rest happily. This outrigger guarantees the balance of your pirogue. It’s extremely stable , and there’s no risk of flipping over once you’re on board.
The outing follows the tides, so you leave with the current of the river to meet the rising tide that brings you back to port. On board the pirogue, a maximum of 12 people paddled in rhythm.
It’s the ideal way to discover the Bay of the Somme and have a good laugh with your partner, family or friends.

A few prerequisites for dugout canoeing
You must be at least 6 years old, be able to swim 25 meters, immerse yourself and have no fear of water. A life jacket is compulsory and will be provided by your guide.
You should also bring closed shoes, a windbreaker and hat, sunglasses and sun cream.
A few precautions for seal-watching
Canoes are the best way to get close to seals. In the water, they are in their element and approach boats with great curiosity. On the sand, on the other hand, they are at rest, and at certain times, their mothers are looking after their newborn pups. Don’t get too close, don’t scare them, and don’t disembark unless your guide tells you to!
