Château de Rambures, immersion in the Middle Ages
- 1412date of construction of the current château
- 700years in the same family
An impressive 15th-century fortress
all round!
With its huge round towers, machicolations and parapet walk, this castle is a remarkable example of15th-century military architecture.
It was in the mid-11th century that the name Rambures first appeared in history. Since then, the Rambures family land has seen the construction of several buildings away from the old feudal motte.
France’s first “brick and stone” castle to feature defensive innovations, the present-day château was completed in the 15th century, against the backdrop of the Hundred Years’ War.
The design of this unique place is attributed to David de Rambures, Grand Master of the Crossbowmen of France, the highest military function of the time, the “Lord Rambures” of Shakespeare’s Henry V.
The visit
Castle and park
You can take a self-guided tour of the interiors to discover what life has been like over the centuries in this fantastic monument. You’ll explore the fully furnished rooms of the fortress. It’s a 700-year journey back in time. For seven centuries, the castle has been inhabited by the same family, whose current custodian since 1058 is the 25th generation! In the dining room, medieval bedroom, grand salon, library and many other rooms, you’ll discover the daily life and history of this family over the centuries.
Arboretum, park and rose garden
Château de Rambures is surrounded by a magnificent English-style park of centuries-old trees, which has been awarded the “remarkable garden” label! An orchard at the far end of the park is a conservatory of old varieties of apple trees. Not to be missed: the venerable white mulberry tree, virtually unique in northern France, and the giant Sequoia, twice a century old since it was brought back from the USA by the Marquis de la Rochefontenilles in 1787. The park’s rose garden now boasts over 500 varieties, or more than 2,500 roses, creating an astonishing trail of scents and colors…. Juxtaposed to this is a medieval-inspired jardin des simples, featuring medicinal, tinctorial and condiment plants.
