The GR800

THE LATEST ADDITION TO THE GR

In 2018, the Fédération Française de Randonnée pédestre (French hiking federation) approved a brand-new GR: the GR 800. This itinerary takes you along the Somme valley, from its source in the Aisne at Fonsommes to its mouth at Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, in the Bay of the Somme. The Somme and Hauts-de-France hiking committees are responsible for signposting. A total of 227 kilometers to discover, on foot, the magnificent landscapes, understand the history of the Somme, visit its heritage and take in the view from the belvederes…

History and heritage

NUGGETS IN EVERY REACH

In the east of the Somme, on the border between the Aisne and Somme departments, where our itinerary begins, the story of the First World War is told. The Historial de la Grande Guerre in Péronne is a leading museum on this theme.

The GR 800 also passes through Jules Verne’s lovely adopted city, nicknamed the Little Venice of the North for its many canals in the heart of the historic district. The Gothic cathedral and Hortillonnages gardens are a must-see.

At Samara, not far from Amiens, you can trace the history of man back 600,000 years in the heart of this historical and archaeological park. The adventure continues with magnificent views over the Somme valley and charming villages such as Long and Eaucourt-sur-Somme, culminating in the Bay of the Somme, where you can watch the river slip into one of the most beautiful bays in the world.
