Abbeville > Baie de Somme
Grand-Laviers, 1st stage
For this short stopover, we recommend a visit to Abbeville: the belfry, the collegiate church of Saint-Vulfran, the church of the Holy Sepulchre and its stained-glass windows by Manessier are all must-sees in this town, which for many years was the department’s leading trading port.
Then join the towpath either via the transit canal on the right bank, then via the cité de l’Arsenal, or via the left bank of the Somme directly on the towpath (under construction during winter 2024-2025).
The Réserve Ornithologique de Grand-Laviers is only 5km from Abbeville. Cross the Somme at La Halte, then continue along the right bank. The entrance to the reserve for bicycles is 500m away. And don’t forget to stop off at Au Coin de la Baie, the local bistro in Grand-Laviers.
Direction Saint-Valery-sur-Somme
The maritime canal
The maritime canal follows its course all the way to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme. Perfectly rolling and well laid out, the route offers plenty of opportunities to stop for a break or a picnic.
One junction after another serves:
– Petit-Port and Cahon-Gouy
– Saigneville
– Boismont
– Pinchefalise
Saint-Valery-sur-Somme
Arrival at Saint-Valery-sur-Somme is on the left bank, so there is no change of bank from Abbeville.
For the rest of the itinerary, when you reach the last lock, the one over which the Baie de Somme little train passes, you can continue with a visit to Saint-Valery or cross the Somme (foot on land: watch out for the rails) to head back north of the Baie de Somme.
On the maritime canal, 4 swing bridges provide easy access to the small towns on either side of the valley. Even if this section seems linear, you’ll be able to reach the bay in complete safety, even with the whole family!
The Baie de Somme by bike
